SAVANNAH, Ga. (WPRI) — Police in Savannah are keeping an eye out for whoever vandalized a historic statue in the city.

According to post on the city’s Facebook page, someone placed googly eyes on a statue of Nathanael Green in Johnston Square.

As you may know, Nathanael Greene was born in Rhode Island and was a major general of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.

“It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter. In fact, it’s a crime,” the city said in a post.

The city is asking anyone with information to call police.

The Facebook post has since gone viral with many people questioning why the city made a big deal out of the act.
