NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A portion of Old Great Road in North Smithfield will be closed next week to make room for bridge repairs.
Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, a detour will be put in place for the section of road that passes under Route 146, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced Wednesday.
RIDOT said traffic will be diverted using Route 146A (Victory Highway/North Main Street), Route 5 (Central Street) and Providence Street in nearby Massachusetts.
RIDOT said crews will be conducting minor repairs on the bridge that carries Route 146 over Old Great Road in hopes of extending its life and avoiding a more costly rehabilitation or replacement project down the road. It’s part of a $7.1 million project that includes several other bridges in the area.
The work is expected to last about three weeks, according to RIDOT. The agency said another brief closure may be possible in the spring to finalize the repairs.
Since the work is weather-dependent, RIDOT noted that the timing of the closure is subject to change.
