Police taking close look at Warwick Motel 6

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Police in Warwick are hoping to clean up criminal activity at a Motel 6 in the city after more arrests were made there this week.

Within the last few days, three people were charged with manufacturing crystal meth at the motel and another man was arrested for sex trafficking. Last summer, a domestic incident led to gunfire and a police standoff.

The motel is located on Jefferson Boulevard, right off of I-95. Police have made a total of 75 arrests there in the past year, and Warwick Police Chief Stephen McCartney believes it may have something to do with the location.

The chief said Mayor Scott Avedisian has directed him to review the motel’s licenses and start a conversation with the management.

“Not for the purpose of taking their licenses away from doing their business, but I think more to have them sit down and review their business model, see if we can tighten up their cooperation with law enforcement and see if we can lower the incidences that we’re seeing right now,” he explained.

The other part of the equation, according to McCartney, is the clientele. Just last year, 1,122 calls came through police dispatch about the motel.

“Many of the people who are coming here, taking advantage of the lower prices, they are undesirable people that are using this place for various nefarious activities,” McCartney said.

Col. McCartney said this probe is specific to the Jefferson Boulevard Motel 6, and he doesn’t consider it a warning shot to other hotels in the city.
