Cell phone video captures moment shots were fired at PVDFest

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police responded to the area of Washington and Union Streets after someone fired several shots into the air at PVDFest Saturday night.

An Eyewitness News crew observed numerous heavily armed officers patrolling the area shortly after 11 p.m.

Since then, Eyewitness News has obtained cell phone video capturing the moments police say several shots were fired into the air.  In it, gunshots can be heard and attendees begin screaming and running from the area.

“It was a tidal wave of people just running,” Robert Gott said.

Gott, who was in the area where the shots were fired, said a couple of small fights were happening when suddenly the shots were fired.

“Most people were afraid for their lives for a minute,” Gott said.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin said the suspect took off running. In a slowed version of the cell phone video, a man can be seen firing two shots into the air before running off.

Police said no one was hurt in the incident.

“Very relieved, it could have been….world news for a minute, thankfully it didn’t happen that way,” Gott said.

So far, no arrests have been made.
