MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (WPRI) — Police continue to investigate a single-car crash in Mattapoisett that claimed two young lives Monday night.

Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons said Wednesday that “based on the significant amount of damage to the vehicle, it appears that the car was traveling greater than the posted speed limit.” However, she said it could take months before the exact cause is known.

According to police, Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues was driving the car when it went off the road and struck a tree at the intersection of Route 6.

Rodrigues, 21, was killed in the crash, along with 18-year-old Meghan Sargent.

Both victims are from Fairhaven, and Sargent was supposed to graduate from high school this coming weekend.

Lyons said there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
