PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A woman remains hospitalized after she was struck by gunfire in Providence late Wednesday night.
The victim underwent surgery at Rhode Island Hospital after she was shot near the intersection of Broad and Stanwood Streets. Her exact condition is not known at this time.
Police have not yet had a chance to speak with the woman, but say the investigation is well underway.
Providence Police Major David Lapatin said two groups of women in the city have been fighting, and Wednesday night it escalated to someone pulling the trigger.
“We believe that she was a participant in this ongoing feud,” said Lapatin.
The shooting took place directly in front of Cavalry Baptist Church. Martha Buxton has worked there for more than 15 years, and said the violence now is worse than ever.
“There’s more to life than shooting and violence,” she said. “We need to spread God’s word.”
With several nights of violence recently, Lapatin laid out a plan to stop it in its tracks.
“We put our men and women on the street and we try and gain intelligence as to what is causing this, where it’s happening, retribution,” he said.
Lapatin said they have persons of interest in this latest shooting, but no arrests have been made yet. One area business said police collected their surveillance footage from Wednesday night as part of the investigation.
