PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Members of the both the Pawtucket and Central Falls police departments were involved in a standoff Wednesday and the tension ended with at least three arrests.
Police circled a home on Park Street in Pawtucket with long guns drawn – searching for three men inside.
According to police, 23-year-old Alton Oliveira, who was wanted by police and considered armed and dangerous, was taken into custody at the residence.
“I spoke to the chief for a few minutes and everything is under control and they’ve apprehended three individuals that started with some shootings back in Central Falls earlier in the day and they happen to chase themselves and get themselves in this area in Pawtucket,” said Pawtucket City Council President David Moran.
Police said Oliveira was wanted in connection with a double shooting at 86 Samoset Avenue in Central Falls earlier in the day. Police said two people, a man and woman, were shot but are expected to be okay.
Houses away from the standoff, police were investigating a moving truck. The vehicle appeared to have bullet holes – one in the windshield and another in the door.
Pawtucket police said the truck was part of a road rage incident. They say the people inside, who were running from the scene in Central Falls, shot at an SUV and then hid inside the Park Street home.
Joseph Calwell, Jr. said he was in his backyard when he heard the shots ring out.
“Gunshots,” he said. “Three young, probably mid-20s run out of the UHAUL truck.”
Oliveira was also wanted for allegedly strangling his girlfriend at their home earlier Wednesday, police said. She was transported to Miriam Hospital and police said her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Central Falls police said Oliveira is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
