Police: Rhode Island man drowns at Georgiaville Pond

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — Police say a 19-year-old Providence man apparently drowned while swimming with friends in Georgiaville Pond northwest of the city.

Smithfield police say the man was in or slightly outside the beach swim area when he went underwater around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say he was pulled out of the water and his friends tried to revive him while waiting for rescue workers to arrive.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His name was not immediately released, pending notification of his family.
