Police: Man tried to rob Mayor Elorza’s press secretary near City Hall


PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The press secretary for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza told police a man attempted to rob her in broad daylight while she was standing outside of City Hall Friday afternoon.

Emily Crowell, 28, told police she was talking on her cell phone on Eddy Street behind City Hall when 49-year-old Jose Gomez demanded she give him a cigarette and then stated “give me something or I’ll [expletive deleted] your [expletive deleted] up.” Gomez continued to follow and threaten her until she notified police.

According to the police report, the incident was caught on surveillance video. The report states that when Gomez was apprehended near 10 Dorrance Street, he threatened to kill a police officer and Crowell.

Crowell, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, was recently appointed to the board of directors for the Providence Downtown Improvement District, an organization that advocates for the area around City Hall and Kennedy Plaza. The group has made the city’s panhandling problem one of its top priorities in recent weeks.This report has been updated for clarity.
