Police: Man hits utility pole after overdosing while driving


NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police in New Bedford were called to the scene of a crash Sunday night that resulted in several power outages.

According to police, the driver of a Ford F250 overdosed while driving and hit a utility pole on Logan Street around 6 p.m.

Witnesses told police the truck was driving east on Logan Street when it stopped at a stop sign near Acushnet Avenue. The truck then accelerated and crossed over to the opposite side of Logan Street and hit the pole. The downed pole caused several power outages in the area, according to police.

An officer on scene said she found the driver in the truck with severe facial injuries and showing signs of an overdose.

Medical personnel arrived at the scene and administered Narcan, according to police, and the man was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment.

Police said the driver, Leo Curran Jr., 64, of East Sandwich, Mass., will be summoned to court on charges of operating under the influence of drugs and operating to endanger.
