WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Woonsocket police are investigating after an elderly resident was found dead inside her home Wednesday.
A large police presence could be seen on Fairfield Avenue as investigators processed the scene. Police said they responded to the home just after 11:30 a.m. to check on the 78-year-old homeowner and arrived to find her deceased.
“This appears to be an isolated event at this time. However, we always recommend that anybody, regardless of the situation should always be diligent about what’s going on in their neighborhood,” said Acting Chef Michael Lemoine of the Woonsocket Police Department.
The cause of the woman’s death has not yet been determined, but police confirmed it’s considered suspicious. The medical examiner’s office said it doesn’t appear she died of natural causes.
The woman’s identity is not being released, pending family notification.
“She used to walk around the neighborhood to give dogs treats. She gave my kids ice capades tickets because she didn’t have any younger relatives. She was a really nice lady,” said neighbor Tammy Deorsey. “I knew her enough to say hi and bye. She was friendly to everybody that she’d seen.”
Police said no arrests have been made so far.
