Police investigating capital city’s 3rd homicide

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A man found shot to death inside a Providence home is the city’s third homicide victim of the year, police said.

40-year-old Kareem Barnes was found dead early Saturday morning in his home at 149 Camden Avenue. The shooting happened at around 3:30 a.m., according to Providence police.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that Barnes lived in the second-floor apartment for the last few months. Detectives obtained a warrant to search the apartment Saturday and also towed a vehicle which is believed to be owned by the victim.

Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department believes the victim knew the shooter.

“We’ve concluded a lot of witness interrogations and interviews and now we’re looking into possible suspects,” he said.

A neighbor, who knew Barnes for over 25 years, expressed her grief over the loss.

“I felt very bad and sad about it. It’s a shame. It wasn’t called for. It was very unnecessary [and] violence is not the answer,” said a neighbor.

Lapatin said that detectives are making progress in the case, but have not released the names of any suspects.
