JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Rhode Island State police are investigating a deadly crash in Johnston involving a motorcycle and an SUV.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. near the Cumberland Farms on Hartford Avenue.
State police on scene told Eyewitness News a black SUV was traveling east on Hartford Avenue and was making a left turn into the Cumberland Farms when a motorcycle going west crashed into the passenger side of the car.
The motorcycle driver, Richard Young, 48, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where police confirm he died from his injuries. Police also said he was wearing a helmet.
State Police said the driver of the SUV did not sustain any injuries.
An eyewitness said he saw the motorcycle driving down Hartford Avenue just before the crash.
“My son said, “Dad, he’s flying,'” Dan Robbins said. “I didn’t even have time to go into my driveway, the motorcycle was down on the ground.”
Robbins said he is a former volunteer firefighter and tried to help the crash victim before the first responders arrived.
“I was looking for a pulse. There was a nurse also there as well,” Robbins said. “I was looking for a pulse…we couldn’t find anything.”
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and they said there was no sign of intoxication on the part of the SUV driver. No arrests have been made.
