NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) – The North Smithfield Police Department are investigating a morning assault of an elderly man after two masked men broke into his home.

Police responded to the area of 1290 Victory Highway just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police tell Eyewitness News the victim, a 72-year-old male, was home when two men wearing masks forced their way through his front door and attacked him.

The men ransacked the victim’s home, ripped up his telephone wires so he couldn’t call for help, and assaulted him, according to neighbors. He was found waiting on his neighbors front porch with lacerations to the head and face.

The victim was taken by police to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The masked men are still at large and this incident remains under investigation. The North Smithfield Police Department is asking for anyone with information regarding this crime, to contact detectives at 401-762-1212 or the North Smithfield Police Department tip line at 401-762-9983.
