PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police say Wednesday’s deadly shooting in downtown Providence appears to be drug-related as they continue to narrow down suspects.
The victim of the shooting was identified Thursday as David Long.
Long, 31, was the passenger in a car traveling along Fountain Street when he was shot around 4 a.m., according to police. He later died at the hospital.
“Definitely targeted, without question,” Col. Hugh Clements said. “The center of the investigation is focused on drug dealing.”
A vigil of candles and flowers was placed in the same spot where Long was when he was shot and killed.
Long’s father tells Eyewitness News he leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. He said his son was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sarah Paine, Long’s sister, lives in Florida but is heading back to Rhode Island for her brother’s funeral.
“My brother will not be remembered as Providence’s 11th homicide of the year,” Pane said in a statement. “He was an amazing person. A sweet and genuine soul. That same soul shines through his daughter, she got that from him.”
Police do not have any suspects in custody at this time but said they’re questioning people who were involved, including the driver of the car.
