Police: Fairhaven man dragged, kicked, burned dog

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WPRI) — A Fairhaven man has been charged with cruelty to animals after police say he abused his dog and burned the animal with a hot poker.

Police said a criminal complaint was filed Monday against Paulo Raposo, 45.

Police said officers were called to Morton Street June 18 after receiving a report that Raposo was abusing his dog Bella – a one-and-a-half-year-old Portuguese water dog.

Police said they were told Raposo frequently kicked and dragged the dog and that he also allegedly burned her with a hot poker.

Police said animal control officers removed Bella from the home and began investigating.

Once it was determined that Bella’s injuries appeared to “deliberate in nature,” police decided to charge Raposo.

Police said Bella is safe and is in the town’s custody.
