PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police said a woman who died while jumping from the parking garage at the Providence Place Mall may not have realized just how high off the ground she was.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was being chased by loss prevention officers when she jumped. According to police, she was suspected of shoplifting from the mall.

Police said several bystanders tried to stop her from jumping.

“People attempted to convince the woman not to go over the wall, and unfortunately she did. She may not have known that it was that big of a drop,” said Col. Hugh Clements of the Providence Police Department. “She was on the first floor of the parking garage, so maybe she saw the number one — she was on the first floor. But the drop was 25 feet, which is a dangerous drop.”

Police have not yet released the woman’s identity because they said they’ve had a difficult time contacting her family.
