ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Police have arrested a woman who they believe robbed a gas station and shot a clerk while wearing a monkey mask in Attleboro last month.
Ashley Weaver was taken into custody Thursday following a traffic stop on Hayward Street. Police found a 40-caliber pistol in her vehicle.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Weaver following an investigation into the robbery, which took place at the Mobile Gas Station on Newport Avenue.
Investigators said the clerk, who was the only person working at the time, was taking out the trash when he was approached by Weaver from behind. Police said the clerk was shot once in the abdomen during a struggle and was able to flag down a patrolling officer.
Police said Weaver faces charges out of Attleboro for armed assault with intent to rob, possession of a firearm and assault and battery with a firearm. She is also being charged with possession of a firearm, being a fugitive in possession of a pistol, simple assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in Rhode Island.
Police said the clerk underwent surgery at Rhode Island Hospital. His current condition is not known at this time.
A similar robbery was reported the day before in Providence, where police said a woman wearing a monkey mask robbed the Gulf station on Plainfield Street. Police have not confirmed if Weaver is a suspect in that robbery, though both Providence and Attleboro are investigating the possible connection.
Investigators said Weaver has an extensive and violent criminal history. She currently has three active arrest warrants out of Boston for armed robbery and assault-related offenses.
