FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A Fall River man is facing several charges after police said he was involved in multiple car break-ins and an armed robbery.
According to the Fall River Police Department, officers responded to Hope Street around 11 p.m. Monday and found the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Joseph Almeida, being held against a fence.
During the investigation, police learned that the person holding Almeida against the fence had witnessed him smash the window of a car and attempt to steal items inside.
Police said Almeida tried to flee the scene, but the man was able to stop him.
Earlier in the evening, other witness said they saw Almeida swinging a large trash bag around, smashing it off another nearby vehicle, causing damage to it.
Police were also investigating an armed robbery where a suspect matching the description of Almeida robbed a man at knifepoint.
According to police, a struggle between the victim and suspect ensued during the robbery, before the victim was able to break free and run for help.
Almeida was still standing in the roadway after the robbery when a neighbor, who recognized the suspect, yelled “Oh my God Joey! What did you do?”
All the witnesses were able to identify the suspect as Almeida after being shown a series of photos.
Almeida was arrested and faces two counts of breaking and entering of a vehicle in the nighttime to commit a felony and armed robbery.
