Plane flips over after landing, pilot unhurt

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – A pilot escaped injury Saturday morning when his small plane flipped over after overrunning the end of the runway.

Middletown firefighters responded to Newport State Airport at about 11:45 a.m. for the crash, which involved a small single-engine aircraft.

Fire officials told Eyewitness News that the plane ran off the end of the runway after landing and the nosewheel dug into the grass, causing the plane to flip over. The plane sustained significant damage to the landing gear, wings and propeller but the pilot got out of the plane on his own and was not hurt.

A fire engine and rescue stood by until the plane could be righted. No fuel was spilled and the fire department cleared the scene at about 1:30.

An representative from the Rhode Island Airport corporation responded to investigate the crash.
