WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) – A construction project in South County is one step closer to completion.
Construction crews hard at work for the last few weeks on Route 78 re-surfacing the roadway.
“We are about 90 percent complete with the milling operations on Route 78 East,” Charles St. Martin from RIDOT tells me.
The roadway connects Route 1 in Westerly to Route 2 in Stonington, Connecticut.
This particular stretch of roadway carries nearly 19,000 vehicles per day.
Traffic heading east, the first to feel the effects of the project.
During the overnight hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays the roadway is closed from the state line to exit 5.
St. Martin say, “Paving is expected to begin next week, weather permitting.”
A detour is taking drivers to Route 2, then onto High St., over to Oak St. and back to Rte. 78
Work on Rte. 78 heading *west* will begin after Labor Day.
The $3 million contract is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
