EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – More than 1,000 cases of Pictsweet Farms 8-ounce Steam’ables Asparagus Spears are being recalled because they may be contaminated with listeria.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the recall affects products with the UPC code “0 70560 97799 9” and with production codes beginning with the following six digits: “2138XD.” The packages have a “Use By” date of 08/01/2020.
The products were sold in most states including Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Pictsweet announced the recall of 1,872 cases after the manufacturer suspected it inadvertently sent contaminated products to the company.
So far, no illnesses have been reported.
Listeria can cause sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include a fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Consumers who bought the recalled products can return them to the store for a full refund.
