Members of the Rhode Island State Police, as well as Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, held a news conference Friday to provide an update on the organized criminal gambling sweeps that were conducted earlier this week.

According to officials, the people arrested during the sweep were involved in “large scale illegal bookmaking” which involved wages on sports contests.

State Police arrested 17 men and charged them with various crimes Tuesday, including bookmaking, organized criminal gambling, and conspiracy.

An additional three people have also been arrested – making for a total of 20 people, including 19 men and one woman.
