(WPRI) — A major pet store has announced that it will no longer sell cat or dog jerky treats made in China. Petco announced on Tuesday that all China-made jerky treats have been removed from their stores nationwide and online.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, the company said that the decision to pull the food “affirms Petco’s commitment to listening to customers and doing the right thing in the best interest of pets.”

The decision came after many complaints were made to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from angry pet owners whose animals either got sick or died after eating products made in China.

Robin Pierre, whose dog died of kidney failure shortly after eating Waggin’ Train Chicken Jerky Tenders, is angry that her animal met such a tragic end.

“She was two years old, she was full of life,” she said of her dog Bella. Pierre says that she is angry and that “this is something that should never happen in the United States.”

According to the FDA, they have received more than 4,800 reports of pet illnesses and 1,000 reports of pet deaths since 2007, all of which were associated with the consumption of jerky pet treats from China.

Since 2007, the FDA has performed more than 1,000 tests on the Chinese treats and still cannot determine what is causing animals to get sick.

Dr. Gary Block, an Ocean State Veterinary Specialist, said that he has treated countless pets who have died after eating jerky treats. “We have over the years seen a number of these patients and its doubly frustrating because we can’t tell people exactly why,” he said.

Call 12 For Action also reached out to PetSmart, who said that they are planning to remove all jerky treats made in China from their stores by March of this year.
