PC bounced from tournament with 73-69 loss to Texas A&M

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WPRI) — Despite strong offensive performances from senior forward Rodney Bullock and sophomore guard Alpha Diallo, the Providence College men’s basketball team was eliminated from NCAA Tournament play Friday by Texas A&M.

The 7-seed Aggies pulled away from the 10-seed Friars in the second half and walked away with a 73-69 victory at Charlotte, North Carolina’s Spectrum Center.

Bullock led the Friars with 22 points and 5 rebounds and Diallo added 21 points and 7 rebounds.

“Got to play better. I let my teammates down,” senior Kyron Cartwright said following the game. I’ll take that. That’s on me.”

A&M’s size was a noteworthy advantage, with the Aggies pulling down 44 rebounds – including 11 on offense – to the Friars’ 26. A&M center Tyler Davis and forward Robert Williams racked up 15 and 14 boards, respectively, along with a combined 27 points. Guard Admon Gilder led the Aggies in scoring with 18 points.

A&M also had an 8-0 advantage in the blocks department.

PC was unable to match the success of URI, who advanced to the next round with an 83-78 overtime win against Oklahoma on Thursday.

The Friars finished the season with a 21-13 overall record and went 10-8 in the Big East. They averaged 74 points per game behind Bullock’s 14 PPG.

A&M (20-12, 9-9) sported a slightly higher average at 75 PPG. The Aggies experienced an early exit from the SEC Tournament last week, courtesy of a buzzer-beater from Alabama’s Collin Sexton.

A&M now moves on to face the University of North Carolina in the next round.
