CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — An elderly woman who was hit by a vehicle in Cumberland Tuesday morning has died from her injuries, town police announced Wednesday.

According to police, Irene Wilkinson was crossing Mendon Road in front of Cumberland Manor at about 8 a.m. when she was struck. Officers responded to the area to find her lying down in the roadway suffering from injuries to her head and a knee.

Wilkinson, 81, of Pawtucket, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver, a 29-year-old Cumberland man, stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

The incident marked the fifth pedestrian accident at that intersection in as many years, according to Rhode Island Rep. Jim McLaughlin (D-Cumberland), who’s now calling on the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to reevaluate the speed limit and traffic lights there.
