Pawtucket police create ‘safe zone’ for online transactions

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Pawtucket police have created a new service for residents to safely meet and complete transactions made through websites such as Craigslist.

The department announced Tuesday that the parking lot and front lobby of the department’s headquarters, located at 121 Roosevelt Avenue, has been designated as an Online Purchase Safe Zone.

Police instituted the program in response to a nationwide trend of people falling victim to scams and more serious crimes when conducting business with an unknown party.

Police said the location was chosen because it’s secure, well-lit, centrally located within the city and not far from I-95.

Anyone needing to conduct private business can utilize the safe zone to finalize their transaction or transfer property.

Despite being outside their headquarters, police said they won’t be involved in the transaction in any way.

Anyone with questions about the service can contact the Pawtucket Police Department at (401) 727-9100.
