PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A truck hit a utility pole Tuesday morning at School Street and Fenwood Avenue in Pawtucket, bringing power lines down on the truck and briefly trapping the driver inside.

After striking the pole, police said the roll-off dumpster hauler came to rest on School Street next to a set of outdoor basketball courts.

The pole was laid down in the middle of the street, wires stretching across. According to a Pawtucket Police officer at the scene, first responders coached the truck driver how to safely exit his vehicle since it was in contact with a power line.

The city’s Department of Public Works, representatives from National Grid and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management also went to the crash site, along with a vehicle for heavy lifting to repair the pole.

The driver was not hurt. Police cited him for leaving the lane of travel.
