FOXBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — After Stephen Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve with a reported season-ending hip injury, the New England Patriots have brought in a seasoned veteran to take over kicking duties.

The team announced Thursday that they’d signed Mike Nugent but didn’t disclose the terms of the deal.

Nugent, 37, was present at practice Thursday. Long-snapper Joe Cardona said losing Gostkowski was a huge blow to the team but now they’re focused on building a relationship with Nugent and building it fast.

“It’s a tremendous help to bring in a veteran but ultimately, we’re starting at ground zero as far as building that chemistry together,” Cardona said.

“Myself and Jake [Bailey] have been working with Stephen exclusively, so now that we have a new piece in it, it’s about him getting used to us, us getting used to him,” he added. “It’s not rocket science, it’s just about repetition and being ready to go out there and perform.”

Nugent played in six games for the Oakland Raiders last season, converting all six of his field-goal attempts and going 4-for-5 on extra points.

The Ohio State product was drafted in the second round by the New York Jets in 2005. He’s converted 253 of 311 field goals and 363 of 377 extra points in his career, which consisted of four seasons with the Jets, six with the Cincinnati Bengals, and brief stints in Arizona, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Dallas, and Oakland.

Nugent’s first appearance will be this Sunday as the Patriots take on the Redskins in Washington.
