NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – The holiday spirit is alive and well in New Bedford, despite a Grinch stealing a package off the front steps of an 82-year-old woman’s home.
Last month, Officer Jason Viera responded to a call regarding an elderly woman who had a shipment of steak and shrimp stolen from her door.
The woman told Officer Viera that she was very disappointed because she and her son were looking forward to a special steak and shrimp dinner.
Officer Viera told the heartbroken woman that he would return with a report number for her the next day.
He returned with much more than the report number.
Officer Viera also left a note in the woman’s mailbox saying that he hoped she and her son would enjoy their dinner, and left a gift card to Stop and Shop.
Officer Viera made the gesture without mentioning it to his colleagues or expecting any recognition in return.
In fact, New Bedford Police only learned of his generous act when the woman’s granddaughter posted it on social media.
“I am extremely proud of Officer Jason Viera and his charitable spirit. His actions and good-heartedness are a reflection of all our officers,” said New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro.
To thank Officer Viera for his act of kindness, the New Bedford Police Department is hosting a ceremony Thursday morning, December 8, at police headquarters.
