P-Bruins give back to community through Children’s Friend

SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — Twenty-three members of the Providence Bruins hockey team took time after practice on Wednesday to travel to Seekonk to fulfill the wish lists of 16 children in need this holiday season through the Children’s Friend Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive.

The players, armed with shopping lists supplied by Children’s Friend, spent the afternoon shopping for the six families.

The lists were collected from Children’s Friend family workers who have identified children and families in need and met with each family to prepare a wish list of winter essentials that they are lacking.

During the annual Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive, members of the community — individuals, organizations, and corporations — are paired with these families to provide items on the wish lists for families in need.

In 2016, more than 5,000 children and their families have prepared wish lists looking for warm coats and clothing, blankets, books, toys, and games to help make their family’s holiday season joyous.

Last December 1,465 families, including 4,500 children, were sponsored during the drive. Donations included 13,200 items of warm clothing, 4,350 coats, and 11,000 toys, books, and games.

The Providence Bruins organization will be collecting toys for the drive at the December 9 (7:05 p.m.) game against the Toronto Marlies and the December 11 (3:05 p.m.) game against the Hartford Wolfpack.

Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game for the Children’s Friend Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive.

A non-profit organization founded in 1834, Children’s Friend is a leading provider of child welfare, family support, mental health, and child development services.
