CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Police say one person has died in a head-on collision on Union Avenue in Cranston.

Eyewitness News has learned the crash happened around 3:10 a.m. Sunday.

According to a Cranston Police press release, members of the Cranston Police Department Patrol Division responded to 420 Union Avenue on the Cranston-Providence line for a report of a car crash early Sunday morning.

Upon further investigation, officials believe a 2007 Honda CRV was traveling west on Union Avenue, when it veered into the eastbound lanes, and struck a 2005 Lexus RX head-on. The driver of the Honda, identified as 36-year-old Hector Alicea of Providence, was not wearing his seat belt. Alicea was brought to Rhode Island Hospital where he later died.

The driver of the Lexus was wearing a seat belt, and was not injured in the crash. One passenger in the back of this vehicle was not wearing a seat belt, and was brought to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries. A child restrained in a car seat, also in the back seat, was brought to Hasbro Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

A preliminary investigation has determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Speed has not yet been ruled out as a cause.

Police say the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cranston Police Department Traffic Unit.
