BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Police and fire officials in Barrington are investigating after a brush fire broke out in the woods near Hampden Meadows School Monday.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News the fire broke out around 4:45 p.m. on Kent Street.

According to firefighters, Monday’s fire was not the first fire to occur in the area.

Officials said Monday’s fire was the first to really spread – though the flames never threatened homes or residents in the area.

“Came here with one truck, realized it was a little bigger than we could handle, just been in there cutting down tree trying to get to it,” said Lt. Jason Fanion of the Barrington Fire Dept. “About a 100 by 50 feet, it wasn’t too big, but it was difficult to get in there.”

Witnesses reported hearing chainsaws as the fire officials checked out the area. Three fire trucks were seen on the street.
