RICHMOND, R.I. (WPRI) — A North Smithfield man was arrested Thursday evening after officers said they saw him driving in Richmond with sparks flying from the rims of his car.

According to the Richmond Police Department, officers patrolling Kingstown Road in Richmond stopped a vehicle that they reported had “sparks flying from the rims of the front and rear wheels.”

Police said upon stopping the vehicle, they noticed extensive damage to the tires and the passenger’s side fenders, which they said was consistent with a recent collision.

The driver, identified as 51-year-old James Moulson, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after police said he failed a series of sobriety tests.

Moulson was taken to the Richmond Police Department where he refused to submit a blood/chemical test. He faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, first offense (BAC unknown) and refusal to submit a blood/chemical test.

Moulson was released and is scheduled to be arraigned in 4th District Court.
