SALEM, Mass. (WPRI) — A North Attleboro man was killed after police say an excavator fell on top of him at a construction site in Salem last week.

Police were called to Washington Sq. on Friday for a report of a piece of construction equipment that had fallen on top of a worker.

When officers arrived, they found the victim, later identified as Daniel McEvoy of North Attleboro, laying on the ground next to a small excavator, which was laying on its side.

Police spoke with a manager on site who said that McEvoy was operating the excavator down a dirt ramp when it began to tip over. McEvoy then fell out of the excavator before it fell on top of him.

Other workers on scene were able to pull McEvoy out from under the excavator before police arrived.

Investigators believe McEvoy suffered chest, rib, lung and head injuries as a result of the accident. He was taken to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is now investigating the incident.
