PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man accused of stabbing to death the mother of his 8-month-old child faced a judge in Providence District Court Wednesday morning.
Luis Matta, 34, was arraigned on charges of murder and violating a protective order in connection with the death of Rachael Rene, 33.
Rene was found stabbed to death in her first-floor apartment on River Avenue Tuesday morning. The couple’s baby was inside the apartment at the time but was unhurt, according to police.
Police said Matta later turned himself in.
“It is a sad time for the entire Rhode Island community to lose a life of someone so young,” Tonya Harris of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence said Wednesday. “Now we have a child who is going to grow up without a mother of course, and so those are things that touch all people and we are deeply saddened to hear of this.”
Rene had a restraining order against Matta following an incident last November. Court documents show Matta was charged with domestic violence and breaking and entering for allegedly breaking into Rene’s home at night.
Warren police said Matta broke down a door looking for her. She wasn’t home at the time, according to police, but another person was.
“Domestic violence is ageless, colorless,” Harris added. “It doesn’t matter what zip code you live in, what area you live in. It goes across all boundaries, so the idea of educating ourselves about domestic violence is ways that we can help others that are in this situation.”
Matta is due back in court on Jan. 30.
