Man calling first aid after car crash accident

Step 1

Stay at the scene

  • Leaving the scene of an accident can have harsh consequences.

Step 2

Call 911

  • If anyone has been injured be sure to call 911 for medical help. It is also a good idea to call authorities to have an officer on scene to document the incident.

Step 3

Exchange Information

  • Be sure to receive the other driver’s insurance company name, policy number, phone number of insurance company, name of driver and occupant, addresses, emails, and phone numbers.

Step 4

Take Photos

  • Be sure to take photos not just of your car, but the other cars involved in the accident. Also take photos of the accident scene including road conditions, skid marks, debris, vehicle positions, and the license of the other driver.

Step 5

Do Not Talk About Insurance

  • Insurance experts say to not talk about your coverage limits or admit fault to drivers. Leave that to the police and insurance company.

Step 6

Get Police Report

  • If you are injured and cannot take photos yourself, make sure you get a copy of the police report for your insurance company.

Step 7

Contact Insurance Company

  • Be sure to contact the insurance company soon after the accident.
