Newport police investigating sexual assault

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Newport police are investigating a sexual assault that happened Sunday night.

Police were called to Pelham Street around 11:30 p.m. after witnesses saw the crime taking place and watched as the suspect took off from the scene.

More calls came in to the police department saying the suspect was spotted in the parking lot on Mary Street.

Officers were able to locate the suspect in the parking lot and arrest him after a brief struggle.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Jose Miguel Mejia Gramajo, is charged with 1st degree sexual assault and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned in Newport District Court on Monday.
