NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WPRI) — A New Shoreham man was arrested Wednesday after police said he was seen hitting his dog on Block Island.

According to the Rhode Island Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA), animal cruelty investigators and New Shoreham police took Alan Smith into custody on one count of unnecessary cruelty.

The RISPCA said witnesses saw Smith, 54, holding down and striking his dog Ramos several times.
