New Bedford treating roads with magnesium chloride

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Several communities in eastern Massachusetts were under a blizzard warning Monday, as snow and wind battered Southern New England.

In New Bedford, a parking ban was in place – with a $50 fine for those who don’t move their cars.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said trucks have been out on the road since 3 a.m. working to pretreat the roads with magnesium chloride.

“That’s a really good melting agent and then we started plowing once the snow got to about three or four inches and that will go around the clock until we’re back in business,” Mitchell told Eyewitness News.

The mayor wanted to remind residents to take their time when clearing driveways and walkways.Eyewitness News Reporter Perry Russom was in New Bedford Monday. See his report in the video above:
