YARMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford couple is facing a laundry list of charges as police allege they broke into numerous cars and boats across Cape Cod over the past few weeks.
Derek R. DeJesus, 43, and Katrina C. Olden, 25, were arrested last weekend after they were caught in the act in Wellfleet, according to Yarmouth police.
Police said fingerprints collected at the crime scenes and GPS tracking allowed for Yarmouth detectives to zero in on the suspects. New Bedford, Harwich, Wellfleet, Sandwich, Eastham, and Massachusetts State Police assisted with the investigation, along with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit.
Yarmouth police charged DeJesus and Olden with 16 counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle at nighttime with the intent to commit a felony, 6 counts of breaking and entering a boat at nighttime with the intent to commit a felony, 1 count of breaking and entering a motor vehicle during the daytime with the intent to commit a felony, 4 counts of larceny under $1,200, and one count of drug larceny.
Other police agencies are compiling additional charges, according to Yarmouth police.
DeJesus, who police said had 93 priors on his record in Massachusetts, was ordered held on $15,000 bail while Olden was held on $1,000 bail.
Police urged residents to keep their vehicles locked – especially at night – secure their valuables, and report any suspicious activity as soon as it’s witnessed.
