NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A sense of hope brought a New Bedford neighborhood together Friday night as a 5-year-old girl remains in critical condition at a Boston hospital.
Family, friends and neighbors gathered at the spot on Roosevelt Street where the young girl and her brother were run over by a vehicle one night prior. Police on Thursday said the two children were playing in a cardboard box and the driver didn’t see them while pulling into a driveway.
“We need prayer here, there’s so much bad that we need good,” family friend Carolyn Miranda said. “It means so much to us that we could help in some small way.”
At last check, the girl was in critical, but stable condition at Boston Children’s Hospital, according to New Bedford police.
“For her to open her eyes today when it was so serious yesterday….for her to open her eyes and see her uncle today, it’s a miracle.” Miranda added.
Her brother, 6, suffered minor injuries.
As the group prayed for the girl’s recovery, her mother joined in from the hospital through video chat.
Police continue to investigate the incident, which they said appeared to be a tragic accident.
