PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- National Grid has broken ground on a new electric substation in downtown Providence. The new construction will replace the existing South Street Substation that dates back to the 1920’s.

The new facility is being built on Eddy Street behind the parking garage for the South Street Landing Project. The substation will power the hurricane barrier, Brown University, Women and Infants Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital.

The new station is set to be completed in 2017.
