Mystic Aquarium puts down ‘very sick’ dolphin found in Barrington

Dolphin stranded in Barrington cove

BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A bottlenose dolphin found stranded off Adams Point in Barrington has been euthanized after it was determined to be ill, according to Mystic Aquarium’s chief clinical veterinarian.

Dr. Jen Flower said the aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team responded to the area Wednesday afternoon and she performed a physical examination of the dolphin upon arrival.

“This dolphin was very, very sick,” Flower said. “He was having a lot of trouble breathing and his heart rate was very low.”

The team determined the best course of action would be to put the dolphin down.

“We always do what’s best for the animals,” Flower added. “In some instances, it’s bringing them back to the aquarium for rehabilitation, which is great, in some instances, it’s humanely euthanizing them on the beach to limit their suffering.”

The dolphin will now be brought back to the aquarium for further examination.
