MVP seal returns to the sea

News

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A young seal named after Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman was released back into the ocean Tuesday morning.

Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program rescued “Edelman,” whose name pays tribute to the New England Patriots wide receiver, in May 2018 after he was found abandoned in Maine.

The seal underwent a year of care before being released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown.

This is not the first seal the aquarium has named after a New England athlete. In February 2017, the program released a seal named “Trey” after New England Patriots defensive lineman Trey Flowers, and another in November 2018 named “Barnes” after Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Barnes.
