MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Police in Middletown are investigating after they say a woman killed her domestic partner inside a Middletown apartment Tuesday morning.

When officers arrived at an apartment complex on Jean Street at 7 a.m., they said they were met by Melissa Sue Anne Castle, 33, who reportedly told them she had been in an argument which led to a violent encounter.

Police then found the body of Rachael S. Kilroy, 34, of 50 Jean St., Middletown, on the second floor of the unit.

The Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced Kilroy dead on scene, according to police. While the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death, police said it appears that she was strangled.

Officers took Castle into custody. She was arraigned Tuesday on one count of domestic murder, then taken to Superior Court to be arraigned as a violator. She was ordered held without bail.

In court, it was revealed that Castle told police “I choked her. She’s dead.”

In an afternoon news conference, Middletown Police Chief Anthony Pesare called the incident “a tragic outcome of domestic violence.”

It’s the second domestic homicide in Rhode Island this week. Providence police said a Providence man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Sunday before turning the gun on himself.
