Memorial in honor of Taunton crash victim sparks community debate

TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Two months after a deadly crash claimed the life of a teenage driver, the community is at odds over the placement of a roadside memorial.

Those who knew 19-year-old Erin Noble said they are shocked that some people want a memorial in her memory removed from the site of the crash.

“She was well-known in the community. She was well-loved,” said Bradford Medeiros, a friend of Noble’s.

According to Taunton police, Noble was killed in June in a single-car crash on Route 44.

Medeiros said the memorial on the side of the road is a way for her friends and family to heal. But this past week on social media, someone took a photo of the memorial and asked for it to be taken down – saying the site is now a bus stop and the memorial’s been there for two months.

“I was just shocked that, it doesn’t matter if its two months or two years, a young girl was killed here,” Medeiros said.

Friends and family of Noble have started an online petition with more than 1,000 signatures to keep the memorial there. It’s even gotten the attention of Taunton Mayor Hoye.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, Hoye said there have been a few complaints about the memorial but ultimately, he hopes to find a solution.

“Certainly, our thoughts and prayers are with the Noble family. In so long that it is not distracting to drivers or blocking roadway or sidewalk assess to pedestrians, I see no reason that a memorial of some sort cannot remain at the site.”

Eyewitness News reached out to the woman who posted about the memorial on social media, but so far, we have not heard back.
