FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A Massachusetts State Police trooper is being hailed a hero after rescuing a “ragged old flag” from the highway Tuesday morning.

According to the Massachusetts State Police’s Facebook page, Trooper Luke Bonin was traveling down I-195 in Fall River when he saw an American flag in a pile of debris against a jersey barrier.

Police said Bonin ran across three lanes of traffic to rescue the flag, which he then folded up properly and brought with him back to police headquarters.

“To paraphrase the late Johnny Cash, ‘It was a ragged old flag, but I made sure to fold her up right,'” Bonin said.
