Mass. State Police investigate deadly New Bedford crash


NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Massachusetts State Police troopers from the Dartmouth Barracks responded to reports of a single car crash on Rt.18 North near Elm Street in New Bedford, around 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

State police investigators confirmed to Eyewitness News, that a 1998 Jeep Cherokee swerved to avoid snow in the roadway, struck a guardrail and rolled over, ejecting the passenger.

The passenger was 22-year-old Theresa Suprenant of New Bedford. Suprenant succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Police said the driver was a 19-year-old woman who is also from New Bedford. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by New Bedford Fire and EMS with minor injuries.

According to police, so far no charges have been filed. The facts and circumstances remain under investigation with the assistance of troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The roadway fully reopened approximately five hours later around noon.
