PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Detectives are investigating the second homicide this week in Providence.
Major David Lapatin confirmed to Eyewitness News that the victim, 33-year-old Andres Arguijo of Providence, was found Saturday morning at about 6 a.m. in an apartment at 149 Alverson Avenue. Arguijo had been stabbed at least once and was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.
Lapatin described the incident as a domestic disturbance, which possibly started from a dispute over a woman.
Police did have a suspect, 32-year-old Fredi Lopez, in custody Saturday. He is now facing a first-degree murder charge.
Lapatin says Lopez is the former boyfriend of a woman Arguijo had been dating, which may have been a motive for the killing.
Providence Police planned to hold a media briefing on the homicide investigation Monday morning.
It’s the second fatal stabbing this week in the city; Thursday morning, a restaurant owner discovered 44-year-old Harold Northup of Providence dead inside a car parked outside his business on Cranston Street.
The suspect in that slaying, 27-year-old Pablo Mendoza, was arraigned Friday on one count of murder.
